Thandeka is the epitome of the dignity and strength that exist in the woman of Africa. She hailed from the old homeland of Transkei and her calm, fairly neutral demeanor hid the enormous determination and courage that existed in her. We knew Thandeka in the 1990’s. While Thandeka’s children were raised by her own parents in the Transkei, Thandeka lived in Khayelitsha in order to be able to work in Cape Town. Every month she sent money back to her parents for her children. Her quiet persistence and power was a lesson to us all.
